MONEY SAVING FIREWOOD SPLITTING TIPS
1. Split your wood within two years or less. Logs that lay on the ground too long will start to rot.
2. If you have a tree service take your tree down, you will have to ask them to cut the large branches into rounds. You will need to be specific about which wood you want to save. While it is possible to split very large diameter rounds, we do not recommend it as it is not cost effective. Generally speaking, you want to save the pieces (rounds) that are small enough to get your arms around, weighing 100lbs or less. Modern tree chippers can chip branches up to a 20 inch diameter. Those are the good pieces you want to save to split, not chip.
3. The fastest wood to split would generally be between 6 - 24 inches in diameter.
4. The length of the rounds should be cut to no more than 20 inches (less if you have a wood burning stove with a small opening).
